Welcome to Athens!

We think you'll love it here!

Athens is annually ranked as one of the best places to live in Alabama. And for good reason! It remains a small town among major growth and progress. From an incredible school system to an influx of new restaurants and bars, Athens has something for everyone.

Southern Character & Charm

First incorporated in 1818, early settlers came to this area for the rich farm dirt resulting in our town becoming one of the largest cotton producers in the country. Our central location along the railroad also made us a popular destination along supply routes during the Civil War.

Today, Athens’ historic downtown square is the backdrop for parades, storytelling, pep rallies, and art events, all while being surrounded by unique shopping and dining experiences. Many other chain restaurants, stores, and trendy shops are conveniently located along US Highways 31and 72 and the Interstate 65 exit. Our proximity to transportation, recreational facilities, and educational centers make this a vibrant spot.

A History of Excellence

Athens City Schools are ranked well among the top schools in the State of Alabama. The district includes one high school, Athens High School, one non-traditional school (K-12) Athens Renaissaince School, one intermediate school, one middle school, and four elementary schools.

Other nearby colleges and universities include Calhoun Community College and Athens State University, the latter a two-year upper level university, offering over thirty majors spanning education, arts and sciences, and business. Athens State University is the oldest continuously operated institution of higher education in Alabama’s state educational system, founded in 1822 on five acres of land as Athens Female Academy.

Recreation and Sport

Whether you are interested in a quiet morning walk on any of our 17 trails, organized sport, or hunting and fishing, you will find there’s something for here for everyone. Limestone County is bound on three sides by water. The Elk River is to the north and west and the Tennessee River and Wheeler Lake Reservoir along the south. So, for the avid hunter, fisher, or water sport enthusiast, there’s much to enjoy along the nearby waterways. Joe Wheeler State Park includes a public golf course, while The Canebrake Club is a private Golf Club located on the east end of Athens.
For the family, we have seven public parks, three with tennis courts, one municipal pool for those hot summer days, and our recreation center hosts various organized leagues from adult softball and volleyball to youth baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, swim and volleyball.
